China Crush the Cross in the Illegal Church

Chinese authorities destroyed "two or three" crosses in some "illegally built" churches in the Yichuan region of Henan.

"The parishes were illegally built without permission from the government, so we destroyed their crosses, and illegal parish activities would also be banned," said a religious affairs official, Zhang.

As quoted by Reuters , this decision was taken based on a law that was inaugurated in February.

The law is seen as a reflection of President Xi Jinping's government policy that wants to tighten oversight of religious activities amidst the majority of atheists. The Global Times newspaper also reported that residents had received leaflets reminding religious residents to immediately register. China's decisive move raises fears of a broader ban in religious communities.

However, Zhang stressed that the government of President Xi Jinping did not intend to target Christianity.

China ensures that the government guarantees the practice of religious freedom as long as it does not challenge party leadership, cause social instability, or threaten national security.

The decision comes amid rumors of a possible agreement between Beijing and the Vatican for the appointment of the bishop, opening diplomatic ties that broke off 70 years ago, when the communists took over China. (has)
