At a meeting in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, the Arab League called for an international inquiry into the "criminal act" of chemical weapons use in Syria.
"We affirm the absolute criticism of the use of chemical weapons against Syrian civilians and we demand an independent international investigation in order to ensure the application of international law to all parties proven to use chemical weapons," the Arab League statement said at a summit in Dhahran on Monday (16 / 4).
The 22-member organization also stressed the importance of a political solution to the settlement of the civil war in Syria.
On the occasion, Saudi Arabia and its allies also expressed support for a joint attack by the United States, France and Britain on a number of Syrian military and chemical weapons sites over the weekend. The attack was denounced by Russia.
The air strike was carried out in response to alleged reuse of chemical weapons by President Bashar al-Assad's regime against rebels in Douma, East Ghouta. The chemical weapons attack on April 7 killed at least 70 people and wounded 1,000 others.
Both Russia and Syria denied the use of chemical weapons against their own citizens. Damascus considers US and allied attacks a form of aggression.
In a speech addressed to the Arab League, Putin asserted that normalization in the Middle East could not have happened without resolving the Palestinian issue.
"All issues concerning the status of the Palestinian territories, including the issue of Jerusalem, must be addressed through direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, on the basis of recognized international law, including relevant resolutions adopted by the United Nations Security Council and the UN General Assembly and the Arab Peace Initiative encouraged by The Arab League, "the Russian president said.
